Muscle Diseases or Myopathies

PNP specialists can treat a multitude of muscle diseases and myopathies including, but not limited to, upper and lower motor neuron diseases, myasthenia gravis, myositis, ALS, CMT, CIDP etc.

Types of muscle diseases/ myopathies.

  1. Upper motor neuron disease

    1. A group of neurological disorders that affect the upper motor neurons which control skeletal muscle activity
    2. Some diseases that damage upper motor neurons are:
      • ALS, vitamin B12 deficiency, Multiple sclerosis, brown Sequard syndrome.
    3. Symptoms of upper motor neuron
      • Muscle weakness
      • Muscle wasting (atrophy)
      • Overactive reflexes
      • Spasms
      • Spasticity
  1. Lower motor neuron disease

    1. Group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control skeletal muscle activity.
    2. Symptoms
      1. Paralysis
      2. Loss of reflexes
      3. Weakness in the muscles.
      4. Atrophy of the muscles.
    3. Several types of motor neuron diseases
        • ALS, progressive muscular atrophy, primary lateral sclerosis

We will work with the patient to get a full and accurate diagnosis. The patient may need further imaging, testing as well as blood work to make a full diagnosis.
