What is trigeminal neuralgia

Chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve which carries sensation from the face to the brain. Even stimulation from putting on makeup or brushing teeth can trigger the severe pain to the area effected.

Symptoms

• Severe pain in the face- usually on one side.

• Sporadic burning or shock like sensations

How is it diagnosed

• Clinical assessment

• Full neurological exam

• MRI may be needed

How is it treated

• Symptom management

• Medications

• Trigeminal nerve block

• Surgical procedure is sometimes warranted.
